Back in 2023, Infix was gaining traction with the development of our flagship Schedule product, aimed at reducing hospital waiting times by optimising theatre efficiency and accelerating the patient pathway. As we iteratively improved the product interface and functionality with user feedback, we also identified new product ideas and felt one of our first resource bottle necks… design. We take design very seriously, and already had a designer co-founder. But, the task of visualising the product and features was becoming more than a one person job.
It was at this moment that the GCAS scheme was brought to our attention. The Graduate Career Advantage Scotland (GCAS) program supports graduates from Scottish universities, including the University of Edinburgh, with career and wellbeing resources. In a nutshell, they would help us vet candidates for a new design role and also support paying them for the first few months of their work with us.
We were sent several candidates for the role and interviewed each of them. The graduate that impressed us most was Peichen Ju (Jojo). Jojo had 5 years design experience, years in UX practice and had won the UXDA reward. She had also developed both the passion and the capability to address the problems found in complex systems, a focus she deepened while studying “Design for Change” at the University of Edinburgh. In our conversation with Chen Ju (Jojo) it also became apparent that she had great enthusiasm and the self-motivation that we would require in our remote working start up.
A support scheme like GCAS not only helps you with finding the right people, but the financial support also de-risks the impact on cashflow that brings fear into the heart of many a founder.
Jojo was one of our first hires. Since she joined, we have expanded the design department and the wider team significantly. Jojo has become a cornerstone member of the organisation. With a deep understanding of the product and the unique way we work and develop our offering. This is one of the many advantages of hiring graduates and letting them grow with you.
Jojo has not stopped learning, since starting with us she has taken additional courses as well as attending different UX design, tech, product meetups in Edinburgh. She helps keep the rest of the design team up to date with emerging technology and design processes. Even though she has graduated from her studies it feels like she is still keeping up that momentum of education, and it adds another huge value point to her role at Infix.
As a foreign national who studied in Scotland Jojo was granted a 2yr working visa. When this ran out last year it was a no brainer for us to help sponsor her to continue her employment with us (as a business we now hold a sponsor licence). We are proud to be a Scottish company, and proud that we are part of an international community that includes team members and our growing client base.
